Case study
Make workplace charging effortless for employers and staff.
A new Community Charging module that let employers offer workplace charging on an employee tariff, with one monthly bill and no manual admin. Launched in Germany, the UK, France and Austria.
The problem to solve
Workplace charging was a new target segment for vaylens with large growth potential. Employers wanted to offer charging to their staff, but doing it well meant setting a fair employee price, controlling who could use which chargers, and billing people individually.
Without the right product, that becomes manual admin for the employer and a clunky experience for employees.
The decision
As product manager, I shaped a Community Charging module that put the employer in control once, then took the admin away.
Employers decide who can charge and at what price. After that, access, contracts and billing run automatically.
How I approached it
Simple invitations. Employers invite employees to charge at specific workplace chargers, and employees charge with either the app or an RFID card.
An employee tariff. Employers offer workplace charging at a specific employee tariff, set once.
One bill a month. Employees get a simplified billing experience, charged just once a month instead of per session.
No manual work for the employer. Once set up, the employer doesn’t have to take any manual actions to provide the service.
Market by market. We launched in Germany first, followed by the UK, France and Austria.
What changed
- A new segment for vaylens. Community Charging gave vaylens a workplace charging product, launched in four European markets. It brought two revenue streams: licence fees for each charge point, and a margin on every charging transaction.
- A simpler experience for employees. Staff charge at work with the app or a card, on their own tariff, and receive one bill a month.
- No admin for employers. Contracts and billing are handled automatically, so employers can offer workplace charging without running it themselves.
